For an easy 5K on a cool morning, water is usually enough. For a two-hour long run, a summer half marathon, or a race where you know you finish with white salt marks on your kit, electrolytes can be genuinely useful. The right tablet is the one you will carry, mix and drink consistently.
What electrolyte tablets actually do
Electrolytes are minerals that help regulate fluid balance, muscle function and nerve signals. Sodium is the key one for runners because it is the main electrolyte lost in sweat. Tablets may also contain potassium, magnesium and calcium, although these are generally present in much smaller amounts.
They do not create energy. Most electrolyte tablets contain little or no carbohydrate, so they are not a substitute for gels, chews or food on long runs. Think of them as part of your hydration plan. If your session is long enough to need fuel, you will normally need to plan both fluid and carbohydrate.
They also cannot make up for drinking far too little. Nor is more automatically better. Taking very high sodium drinks on a short, cool run is unlikely to help, while drinking excessive amounts of plain water during a long event can dilute sodium in the blood. The aim is sensible, steady hydration that fits the conditions and your own sweat losses.

The front of a tube often promises hydration, performance and refreshing flavour. Turn it around. The nutrition panel tells you far more. For runners, compare sodium per tablet and the amount of water it is intended to be mixed with.
A tablet with 250mg of sodium in 500ml is quite different from one containing 500mg in the same bottle. Equally, a tablet designed for 750ml can be diluted further, but that changes both the flavour and the sodium concentration. Always compare like for like.

Sodium: choose for your sweat, not the marketing

Do not diagnose every cramp as an electrolyte problem. Cramps can be linked to pacing, fatigue, training load and muscle conditioning as well as hydration. If cramps only arrive when you race too hard, adding another tablet may not fix the cause.
Sugar-free versus carbohydrate tablets
Most popular electrolyte tablets are low-calorie or sugar-free. This is useful when you want hydration without a sweet, sticky drink or extra calories. They are straightforward for easy runs, gym sessions and long runs where you are already taking gels.
Carbohydrate-containing drink tablets or powders can be more useful when you prefer to take in some fuel through your bottle. The trade-off is that they are usually sweeter, can feel heavier on the stomach and make it harder to track your total carbohydrate intake. For a marathon, some runners like this approach. Others prefer plain electrolyte drink plus familiar gels at regular intervals.
Keep your plan simple enough to follow when you are tired. If you have to calculate every sip, gel and tablet halfway through a race, the system may be too complicated.
The best type for different running situations
For a first 10K or a parkrun, you probably do not need an electrolyte tablet at all unless it is unusually hot or you have been running for much longer beforehand. Good hydration across the day matters more than forcing down a sports drink before a short event.
For long runs of 90 minutes or more, tablets become more useful, especially in warmer weather. A moderate sodium tablet in one soft flask is an easy place to start. Take small, regular drinks rather than waiting until you feel completely thirsty. Carrying your own fluid also means you are not relying on an aid station having a drink that agrees with you.
For a half marathon or marathon, match your tablets to the expected conditions and the event's water stops. If you plan to use tablets, test whether they dissolve quickly in your flask and whether they still taste acceptable after an hour or two. Fizzing tablets can build pressure in a tightly sealed flask if you close it immediately, so let them dissolve fully before leaving home where possible.
For trail races and ultras, convenience becomes more important. You may need spare tablets that do not rattle loose, get damp or take up valuable room. A hydration vest with easy-access flask pockets makes it simpler to drink little and often, while a secure running belt can hold a tube or a few tablets for shorter sessions. Check the event rules and aid station plan before deciding how much to carry.
Flavour and stomach comfort are not minor details
A tablet can have ideal sodium levels and still be the wrong choice if you stop drinking it after 10 kilometres. Taste fatigue is real. A sharp citrus flavour may feel refreshing early in a race but become unpleasant later. Some runners prefer light flavours, while others want something stronger to mask warm bottle water.
Sweeteners are another personal variable. Sugar alcohols, intense sweeteners and added flavourings suit many runners perfectly well, but some people find certain products cause bloating or nausea. This is not a reason to avoid all tablets. It is a reason to test one product at a time during ordinary training.
Start with the recommended dilution. If it is too strong, use a little more water for everyday runs, but remember that doing so lowers the sodium you receive per sip. On race day, use the same concentration you trained with.
Cost, waste and carrying practicalities
Tablets are often more convenient than ready-mixed sports drinks. A tube is light, bottles can be filled anywhere, and you are not carrying bulky liquids home from the shops. That makes them a practical option for runners who train before work, travel to events or refill at public water points.
The downside is packaging. Individual tubes and foil wrappers create waste, and tablets can crumble if they are stored loose in a sweaty pocket. Keep them dry and secure. If you use soft flasks, practise dropping a tablet into the opening without losing it in the grass or on a wet pavement.
Cost per serving is worth checking, but the cheapest tablet is not always the best value if it tastes poor or leaves you under-salted in the conditions you run in. A product you use consistently during key long runs is more useful than a bargain tube that stays in a cupboard.
How to test an electrolyte tablet before race day
Use a long run that resembles your event, not a recovery jog. Drink the tablet at the same concentration and roughly the same frequency you expect to use in the race. Pair it with the gels or food you intend to carry, because stomach problems often come from the combination rather than one product alone.
Pay attention to thirst, flavour, stomach comfort and how easy the tablet is to prepare with tired hands. Also note the weather. A drink that feels unnecessary in February may be exactly what you want during a humid July training run.
If you have high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart conditions or have been advised to limit salt, speak with a clinician before deliberately increasing sodium intake. The same applies if you experience confusion, severe headache, vomiting or unusual swelling during or after endurance exercise. Those symptoms need medical advice, not more tablets.
The most useful choice is rarely the one with the longest ingredient list. Pick an electrolyte tablet that fits your distance, sweat rate and stomach, then practise with it until it becomes one less thing to think about when the miles get hard.
