What a good electrolyte powder needs to do
Electrolytes are minerals that help regulate fluid balance and support normal muscle and nerve function. For runners, sodium is usually the one worth paying closest attention to. It is lost in sweat, and losses can be significant on warm days, during long sessions and for runners who finish with salt marks on their kit.
A useful powder should encourage you to drink enough and replace some of that sodium without upsetting your stomach. It should also mix quickly in the bottle you actually run with. A powder that clumps at the bottom of a soft flask is not practical halfway through a session.
For most runs under an hour in cool conditions, water is often enough. Electrolyte drinks earn their place when the run is longer, warmer, hillier or particularly sweaty. They can also help if you are running again later that day or need to start your recovery well hydrated.

Flavour is a performance issue

Marathon and ultra runners need to consider sodium, carbohydrate and supply. Can you comfortably drink it for several hours? Does it fit with the aid-station plan or what your crew can carry? Is each serving easy to measure when you are tired? A large tub may be economical at home, but individual sachets can be the simpler option for travel and race bags.
